Christmas Cheer or More Like Networking Fear
Bah Humbug - it sounds like stress to me!
Frankly, most people don't have a clue when it
comes to preparing how to communicate or network at busy times as they are focussing
on trying to sell who they are and what they do rather than marketing the benefits
and value their services provide. So, Christmas events that should be relaxing
can become a hassle, frustrating, downright boring and a general waste of time
and money. This leaves many people simply walking away with no benefit, potential
outcome or the prospect of building a business relationship. And with so many
people being obliged to go to the Christmas drinks or gatherings, a huge percentage
usually can't wait to leave. Sound familiar?
Having a communication and networking plan is as
important as preparing your marketing or business plan and needs to be done
prior to attending meetings, events and even networking opportunities. If you
want to be take the stress out of going to Christmas events with clients, customers
or even some staff whom you don't know very well, consider the following steps
to help convert the "Damn, I have to go the company cocktail party" to "What
a great opportunity to talk to people I have admired or want to get to know"
- Take initiative and create introductions by
asking for them directly with those who can help
- Ask organisers of events to sit you with certain
persons that you want an introduction to. If this can't take place ask for
a personal introduction in the least.
- Ask your networks for referrals - if you don't
ask the answer is always No!
- Be in the moment - if you suffer from premature
exasperation by interrupting, talking too much or being impatient don't expect
people will be interested in following up as they may have stoped listening
before you finished speaking.
Masterful communication and networking builds networks.
Networks build your networth. If that's important to you, take the stress out
of Christmas events and be prepared for some serious fun!
